Scrolller Bi-Weekly Update February 20th, 2022

Intro

Hello and Welcome to our weekly update. This week's main highlight is the launch of recommendation emails for beta users, an improved user interface for Albums, the addition of full-length video links to Scrolller content and performance updates. We are also inviting indie content creators to join Scrolller. Read the newsletter to find the benefits you will get as a creator on Scrolller.

User Highlight

This week's user highlight goes to "Oliver Ebsworth". The summary of user feedback is as follows:

Hi, There is a feature missing from scrolller that is seen in most other apps, I feel that especially on the NSFW side of things it would be much appreciated. The ability to block a certain image from showing up again would be amazing. This would help people that have certain triggers to content, still be able to enjoy scrolller.

Scrolller's Action

Oliver Thank you for such great feedback. We would like to inform you that our team is already working on this feature. We know that sometimes some specific images, videos, or even whole collections can trigger some users. Based on that we will hide all related content for that user. These hidden contents and collections will appear in the excluded content section of filters. Users can always choose to see that content again by removing it from exclude list.

Highlighting Albums

Albums are often great pieces of content, that have the same topic or present a story. In the Scrolller journey, We try our best to introduce features that make the Scrolller user experience more engaging and enjoyable. Albums were a really underutilized feature on Scrolller. In fact, the majority of our users didn’t even know that it was possible to view Albums on Scrolller. This week our development team was focused on revamping the album's experience on the website. Now our users will have an easier way to find such pieces of content.

Previous Implementation

Previously albums were displayed like regular content. Users could just see a single piece from the album on gallery view. This made it really difficult to identify an album right on the homepage while scrolling through content. The only way users can figure out if they are viewing an album was that in fullscreen mode a new icon appeared on the sidebar - “Related”. Clicking on it revealed the whole album. It is a negative user experience in itself.

New User Experience:

The first thing to improve this underutilized feature was to make sure that users are able to distinguish between regular content and album right on the homepage. While scrolling through the gallery users will now notice a new white icon on the top-left corner of the content tile. This indicates that the content is an album. To view the album users can click on that icon or click on the “Show Album” button. The same icon can now be seen on the full-screen mode to avoid any confusion.

Full-Length Source link launched for our users

Sometimes you find a video clip that just sticks in your mind and you want to find the full-length link for that video. Scrolller has made it a reality. Our users will now be served with a full-length link to each video where ever it is possible. Our database has now over 97K full-length video links for the videos and gifs in Scrolller and it's growing every day.

Our users have an opportunity to earn a free monthly premium subscription, by sending us links to full-length videos. If you have previously seen a full video that you can see a part on Scrolller, send us the link. Whenever a user submits 5 source link that gets verified they get rewarded with one month of premium subscription. Users will be able to see the stats on how many links they have submitted and how many of them have been verified so far. They will also be able to claim premium once they have the necessary verified links on their account.

There is no limit on how many months of premium subscriptions users can earn. Keep submitting verified links and Scrolller will keep you provided with free premium subscriptions.

Recommendation Emails Launched for all Beta Users.

Scrolller has so much variety of content on a platform that it is impossible for a user to explore everything related to their interests. That is where machine learning plays its role. Our team has worked on Recommendations for several months to get the system reliably running. Now that our internal team has tested the recommendations produced by this system, we have launched it for our beta users that signed up for receiving these emails. If you are a beta user, you will notice emails from Scrolller recommending content based on your interests.

How does it work?

A special algorithm is used to find correlations in the preferences for different collections. Collections that are liked by the same people are classified as similar. If you have not yet interacted with a collection that is similar to the ones you like the algorithm suggests it to you. The more it knows about each user the better and more personalized the recommendation will become. The recommendation emails suggest 12 new collections to users based on their interests. As our users interact with these recommendations, the system will learn and generate more relevant recommendations for them.

Next Steps:

In this week our team is focused on launching email recommendations for all of our users. That means by end of next week 380000+ users will be actively receiving our email recommendations. Once this is done team will start working on implementing the recommendations throughout Scrolller. The areas that will benefit the most from these recommendations are

• Favorites and Follows Page

Our target is to provide our users with the most engaging content and make their experience the best, and it is only possible when Scrolller is serving them the content that is according to their taste.

Inviting Indie Content Creators to Join Scrolller

Scrolller has started to work on an MVP for the content creators where they can post both SFW and NSFW content. The first thing is we want to earn people’s trust by making sure we don’t do any false promises. Scrolller will provide a safe environment for our content creators, as being a User-Driven Company, we listen to what our users have to say about the product.

Benefits of Joining Scrolller

We are inviting all indie content creators on the Scrolller to join us. As pioneers of content creation on Scrolller, we will provide the following benefits to these creators.

• Unlike other platforms, 100% of their earnings from Scrolller will belong to them.

• Their content will be featured on Scrolller on various collections and homepage.

• Scrolller will provide them with free 1 million impressions on their collection.

• They will be provided with a lifetime premium subscription for free.

How to Join

Currently, not everyone can be a content creator on Scrolller. It is because we are focused on the quality of content for our users. If you want to be a part of Scrolller as a content creator, you need to have some presence as a content creator on any platform. You should have followers and valid proof of being 18+. If you meet this criterion please submit your information HERE. Our team will get in contact with you and will provide you with more information on what it’s like to be a content creator on Scrolller.

Updates on Performance Fixes

Scrolller is faster for all of our users but we do not want to stop here. Our team is working on making Scrolller lightning fast around the globe. For this purpose, the development team is currently focused on implementing Object Storage for faster delivery of content. Object Storage is installed now and the team has started the syncing of files to it.

The syncing using classical methods are slow (12-15 days to complete the migration of 4 TB). In order to solve this problem, we implemented a new approach to syncing, by using multiple parallel sync processes. It improved the syncing process by 4-5 times. Now the only limitation is the network speed.

The page load times in America and Europe continue to become more stable as we can see from the graphs below. Our target is to achieve a homogeneous experience throughout the world for our users. This is only possible if all of our users are being served with the content through the fastest routes available.

The team has managed to get big amounts of traffic coming from Reddit and is still thinking of a way to keep this traffic going. So far, they have encountered +150 cool Redditors who loved our website and decided to create an account!

The team is getting to know a lot of cool friendly Content Creators with their outreach! Hundreds of creators are being reached and invited to join the Scrolller content creators platform as long as they fit our criteria. Our team is working as agents for content creators, providing them with an offer as well as information, a question answering service, and direct meetups with Scrolller directors.
